Can we utilize transport proteins in the design of next generation agricultural products? Metabolic engineering in general tends to focus on the kinetic properties of enzymes and the regulatory networks that control expression of pathway components, leading to successes in microbial organisms. To achieve the same level of success in plant metabolic engineering a better understanding of complex plant metabolism is needed. Often overlooked is the role of transport proteins in organellar and intercellular transport in the rational of design in plant engineering.
